Job Description

Maintenance Technician

The purpose of this position is to provide maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs to cars, light trucks, SUV's, trailers, and small equipment to ensure Gila County and its employees have safe, reliable, and properly operating vehicles and equipment. This position requires the operation of service trucks and occasionally some light and heavy duty trucks and equipment in addition to ensuring a clean and safe workplace.

Essential duties and responsibilities include:

  • Performing preventative maintenance, repairs, minor and major overhauls, car/truck/equipment performance evaluations, and comprehensive multi-point safety inspections on all County vehicles and equipment to include sedans, SUV's, light duty trucks, trailers, ATV's, small gasoline engines, small equipment, generators, pumps, law enforcement equipment, and other specialized types of equipment as required.
  • Performing diagnostics to determine the nature of repairs required to make the vehicle/equipment safe and operable, including performing road tests before and after the repairs.
  • Performing maintenance and repairs on gasoline engines, diesel engines, manual and automatic transmissions, drivetrain components, tires, brakes, steering and suspension, exhaust, emissions, electrical/electronic, and climate control systems.
  • Assisting with heavy duty vehicles/equipment maintenance and repairs.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Using a variety of computers, computer software, laptops, scanner/printers, diagnostic equipment, scan tools, hand tools, power tools, service trucks, and specialized equipment such as automotive lifts, pressure washers, cranes, welders, forklifts, and similar types of equipment as required.
  • Documenting and recording repair and maintenance information both on paper and electronically via fleet management software.
  • Operating a variety of service trucks and towing equipment to provide field service maintenance and repairs, and emergency services for County vehicles and equipment. These services sometimes are provided after hours as deemed necessary as part of a rotational on-call schedule.
  • Designing, fabricating, modifying, repairing, and painting vehicle accessories, radio support mounts, emergency light mounts, cargo hold-downs, supports, steps, and ladders; using grinders, plasma cutters, torches, and a variety of welding styles and techniques. Installing equipment, vehicle/equipment modifications, emergency lighting, and decaling such as stripes and emblems on law enforcement and emergency vehicles.
  • Maintaining and keeping a clean and organized workplace including sweeping, mopping, picking up tools, and cleaning shop benches; cleaning and fueling vehicles; picking up and delivering vehicles and equipment in the field.

Minimum education and experience required:

High School Diploma or GED.

Two (2) years combined of directly related on the job experience in either car, truck, or equipment maintenance and repair; or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Basic training in gasoline engine maintenance, brakes, steering & suspension, basic electrical, climate control, and gasoline engine repair required. Professional trade and/or technical certification desirable.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities required:

Routine maintenance; electrical/electronic systems for vehicles and other equipment; hydraulic systems; understanding of mechanical machines and tools; hazardous materials (handling and disposal); automotive/equipment maintenance principles and practices; maintenance/repair methods and standards; interface and use of diagnostic equipment used to repair/maintain vehicles and equipment; safety precautions relevant to repairing, maintaining, and operating light and heavy duty vehicles; design and fabrication techniques.

Customer service; basic computer skills; use of computers and applicable computer software; multi-tasking; operating light and heavy duty vehicles/equipment; problem recognition; problem solving; troubleshooting; following flow charts and conducting tests; electrical/electronic diagnostics; operation and understanding of scan tools and other job-specific specialized tools; read, understand, and navigate electrical wiring diagrams and electronic and paperback service manuals.

Read and write minimum high school level; solve problems sensibly and swiftly using deductive reasoning; perform tasks with finger dexterity; maintain hand-eye coordination and follow orders.

Physical demands:

Regularly stands to perform work, attend to customers, perform custodial work, and work with arms above head to perform tasks.

Occasionally sits to document repairs, complete reports, and to operate special equipment.

May be required to lift work-related materials, equipment, tools, and/or gears or more than 75 lbs. in weight.

Constantly requires dexterity for keyboard operation, special tools, and special machines.

Incumbents in this position may be required to occasionally walk to and from work sites; regularly bend; occasionally stoop, crawl, twist, kneel in/out/over/under vehicles and occasionally work from heights to complete tasks.

Work environment:

Incumbents in this position perform work in a maintenance shop environment and occasionally in the field and in and around construction type areas. May occasionally spend time in an office environment.

Safety risk exposure:

Incumbents in this position may be exposed to variable weather conditions when repairing vehicles in the field; exposure to engine, transmission, and hydraulic oil, cleaning solvents, physical danger, mechanical hazards, chemical hazards, electrical hazards, fire hazards, respiratory hazards, extreme temperature, and noise and vibration.

Protective gear & safety manuals:

Incumbents in this position are required to constantly follow written and/or electronic safety procedures and manuals relevant to the division or department. This position constantly requires safety footwear, eye protection devices, and a hard hat; routinely requires hearing protection devices, and occasionally protective welding apparel (i.e. helmet, gloves, clothing).

Consequences of error:

Potential errors can have legal ramifications, loss of funding, loss of organization's credibility.
